Stellar Astronomy Scholarships for Girls

Stellar Astronomy Scholarships for Girls were announced by the Public Education Foundation during the International year of Astronomy in 2009. The scholarships were made available to girls in public schools and are intended to encourage and support girls studying Physics in years 11 and 12. The scholarships were highly competitive attracting more than 100 applications. Each  scholarship is valued at up to $4,000  and includes:

  • two cash payments at the beginning of years 11 and 12
  • Tasco astronomical telescope
  • a week’s work experience at the Sydney Observatory
  • a personal mentor assigned to support the student in her studies
  • remote telescope site access to a telescope on Mt Joy in new mexico, USA
  • a copy of Planisphere
  • a copy of the 2010 Australian Skyguide
  • textbooks and other reading material
  • membership of the Sutherland Astronomical Society

Twelve scholarships have been awarded  in 2011.   The awards scholarship will be presented by her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, at a ceremony at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney on March 22nd.
