1 December 2017:
It is the very best time of year here at the Public Education Foundation.
But also, the most heartbreaking.
At the end of next week, we are advising our scholarship applicants on whether they have been successful in receiving funding and support in 2018. Our panels have met and around 200 public school students will receive scholarships this year. However, we have been overwhelmed by the potential and need in our schools, and hope to award scholarships to many more deserving students. We need your help to do this.
Let me tell you about Matthew*, the extraordinary public school student from NSW who, despite being legally blind, has applied for funding to transition to University to undertake a Bachelor of Education so he can become a teacher and inspire students in the way his public school teachers inspired him.
And Jasmine*, who has overcome the trauma of fleeing war-torn Syria to go on to become the school vice-captain and place herself in the top 10% of her year-group academically. Jasmine wants to become a nurse when she leaves school, so she can give back to the community who supported her when she arrived as a refugee.
Or Jordan*, who at the tender age of 7 is about to transition to Year 2 with an unswerving passion for STEM. He wants to become an astronomer when he grows up however his family lives 70km away from the nearest town and cannot afford the fees to send him to the enrichment opportunities that would propel his talents for science.
These students, and many more, have applied for scholarships this year and are sitting on our reserve list if additional funding becomes available.
We need your help to raise $50,000 in 5 days to give students like Matthew, Jasmine and Jordan the additional support they need to realise their potential.
- A gift of $100 can contribute to a scholarship to support a student from a refugee background
• A gift of $1,000 can support a primary school student for 12 months
• A gift of $2,500 can assist a student with a physical disability transition to university
• A gift of $5,000 and above can provide substantial scholarship support to a student with specific curriculum interests
All donations of $2 and above are tax-deductible and at PEF we ensure that no more than 10% of your gift is put towards administrative expenses.
Help us to realise the potential of the talented students in our public schools who deserve every chance to make their mark. Donate by 5pm Wednesday 7 December and your donation will directly benefit a student in 2018.
You can donate online here or phone our office to make your donation over the phone. We are ready to take your call on 02 9266 8452.
