The Public Education Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to providing life changing scholarships to young people in public education, as well as their teachers and principals.

Our role is to enhance the value and reputation of public education because we know a high quality public education system has the power to change lives and transform communities.

The Public Education Foundation was established in 2007 following an Australian Tax Office ruling allowing tax deductible philanthropic funds to support public education.  As a not-for-profit entity, the Foundation is able to accept donations from individuals trusts and businesses, based on its DGR (Deductible Gift Recipient) status. This has permitted public education to match the independent school sector in accessing philanthropic funds in support of students and teachers in public schools.

The Public Education Foundation doesn’t exist to do the job of government, but to support students with particular educational needs or talents – students who without extra help will struggle to reach their full potential. We focus on removing the barriers to achievement created by social and economic disadvantage, and on acknowledging and rewarding excellence.

We also support teachers, principals and other education leaders by providing them with the very best professional development at universities around the world. The Foundation is a national charity, working in collaboration with Departments of Education across Australia, schools, communities, individuals, the private sector and government agencies to help students achieve their full potential and acknowledge teaching and learning excellence in the public education system.

What we do:

  • Recognise that individual students draw support and encouragement from their families, their schools and the broader community;

  • Support students to achieve their potential at public schools;

  • Enhance the value and reputation of public school education;

  • Target support of the school community in ways which build on evidence;

  • Provide a tax exempt fund for community contributions to public education;

  • Work in collaboration with government, schools, communities and business to achieve the Foundation’s goals.

Our scholarships focus on need:

  • Students from low socio-economic backgrounds

  • Indigenous students

  • Students from refugee backgrounds

  • Students in rural and remote areas

  • Students living with a disability
