The Public Education Foundation welcomes the appointment of new Education Minister
The Public Education Foundation (PEF) welcomes the appointment of The Hon. Dan Tehan MP as the new Commonwealth Minister for Education.
The Foundation’s Executive Director, David Hetherington, congratulates Mr Tehan on his appointment and expresses PEF’s commitment to working with the Minister on issues facing the education sector, notably the persistent under-funding of public schools.
“Public schools educate over two-thirds of Australian children and our public education system is an invaluable national asset,” observed Mr Hetherington. “It is critical that the Federal Government quickly resolve the uncertainty around schools funding.”
PEF believes that any solution should be based on the following principles:
- All schools should be funded to 100% of the school resource standard, with no differing caps on the Commonwealth’s contribution to government and non-government schools;
- In the first instance, funding shortfalls should be met by reducing the public funding contribution to schools funded above 100% of the school resource standard;
- There should be no “special deals” for particular education sectors or bloc funding for groups of schools; and
- Cuts to education funding should not be borne by the most disadvantaged, as has occurred with the recent cuts to disability funding in schools.
“We encourage Mr Tehan to work closely with the States and Territories to ensure that a finalised funding agreement reflects these principles,” Mr Hetherington said.
The Public Education Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to providing life-changing scholarships to students and educators in public education, and enhancing the value and reputation of public education.
